Prussian Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke famously wrote, “No plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the main enemy forces.” I prefer Mike Tyson’s version, “Everyone has a plan until they get hit for the first time.”
That sums up a lot of the human experience for me. We dream and we plan, preparing for a specific future … then life happens and we wonder how we got from Point A to Point Z, barely remembering the points in-between. How do we do it? Probably a combination of preparation and creativity.
The quote also rings true when we talk about how to make education and learning better for our children. Everyone has great plans, until they don’t. How can we design and implement effective reforms for our kids? How do we move beyond the latest fads to create real, positive change for today’s students?
Those are the topics this newsletter and the accompanying podcast (to debut in early 2025) explore: Creativity, education, advanced learning, and other topics that are too rarely discussed in the media and public discourse. I aim to be provocative and thoughtful, and you’ll have to put up with some pop culture observations, too!
